Is there an office of an evangelist? Five reasons we should reconsider “evangelists.”

The concept of itinerant evangelists preaching to churches throughout the year is commonplace in many Christian circles. However, a critical question often goes unaddressed: Is this practice supported by scripture? In order to evaluate this topic, let us consider five points which may be helpful in guiding the conversation. While a full exploration of the concept is beyond the scope of this article, these initial points may prove to be beneficial for further discussion.

1. The New Testament does not specify the roles of evangelists, and does not define the office of evangelists as distinct from other church roles.

2. The New Testament does not contain any instructions for the selection and ordination of evangelists.

3. The New Testament does not designate evangelists to be part of church leadership.

4. The New Testament does not indicate that there is any special authority or status associated with the office of evangelists.

5. Evangelism is a function of all believers, and not just those with a special title or office.
